TFF Provides RIL Training for Guyana Forestry Officials

In November 1999, TFF planned and conducted a training program in reduced impact logging for Guyanese officials. The training course took place in Brazil in order to take advantage of the excellent training and demonstration facilities already in place. A special English-language course was developed for the two-week program.

Participants included government representatives, timber industry officials, and representatives from the Iwokrama Center for Rain Forest Conservation and Development. Before attending the training course, the participants first visited Guyanese logging operations and received briefings from the Guyana Forestry Commission on new forestry practices mandated by law.

The course was the result of a multi-step planning process involving all the stakeholders. It is also a significant expansion of TFF's work in Brazil to other Latin American countries with similar forest resources. Although the country is small - Guyana has only 83,000 square miles and a population of less than one million - it is more than 90 percent forested.

Timber harvesting has been expanding rapidly, and there is momentum for learning about and adopting forest management and reduced-impact-logging principles. To follow up on the initial training course, TFF Executive Director Keister Evans will work with various stakeholders, including the Guyana Forestry commission, the Forest Products Association, Iwokrama, and Tropenbos, to build a program that will establish in-country demonstrations and research as well as provide technical assistance.
