A number of factors cause deforestation. Chief among them are poverty, overpopulation, and
misguided government policies, to name but a few. These give rise to more immediate causes such
as slash-and-burn agriculture, encroachment and uncontrolled logging.
TFF has chosen Sustainable Forest Management as a way of countering these harmful practices. To
many of you, this might be an unfamiliar concept. We'd like to change that. Sustainable Forest
Management is a process of managing permanent forest land in a way that promotes the protection
of soil, water, wildlife and timber resources in perpetuity.
This is the essence of Sustainable Forest Management and integrating this process with your
company's goals is easier than you might think. The international tropical timber industry and
those who rely on its resources, share the growing concern for better tropical forest
management. Many have implemented important changes world-wide by taking some of the following
steps toward adopting sustainable forest management practices.
|

 |
Commit to sustainable management in all timber harvesting.
