Developing Practical, Relevant Approaches for Indonesian Forestry
The Southeast Asia and Pacific Program of the Tropical Forest Foundation (TFF-Indonesia) is focused primarily on Indonesia, home to the largest area of tropical forest in the region. Now in its ninth year of operations, the TFF-Indonesia program has achieved a reputation for developing practical and relevant approaches to meet the evolving needs of the Indonesian forestry sector.
Shaping and Strengthening TFF’s Programs and Services
The core activity of the TFF-Indonesia program is practical training for Reduced Impact Logging (RIL). However, issues such as legality, market linking and certification support are increasingly integrated into the foundation’s services.
TFF-Indonesia has proven its relevance and effectiveness by initiating and redefining TFF programs. Recognizing that each company or forest management unit has different needs, TFF developed a modular approach to its RIL training program over eight years ago in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Building on this regional experience, the foundation refined its RIL training program to include individual training modules that focus on particular technical aspects of the RIL process and emphasize “hands-on” practical training through “learning by doing.”
In 2003, TFF-Indonesia developed a forest-market linking program as a pilot project, which is now promoted as a full-fledged program involving the use of labels and specific market claims that set out to provide strong and transparent assurances of legality of origin to buyers who increasingly find their purchasing policies subject to attack by environmental lobbies. This project combines the issue of legality with the adoption of RIL and has now been expanded and strengthened to encompass all key aspects of TFF-Indonesia activities.
Flourishing In Indonesia – and Beyond
TFF-Indonesia publishes a newsletter that includes reduced impact logging and verification project updates in both English and Bahasa Indonesian. Additionally, technical procedure manuals have been developed as “how to” guides for the implementation of key aspects of RIL.
In the past, the Indonesia program has received donor support from USAID, the US State Department, USDA-Forest Service, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), The Home Depot, Association of Indonesian Forest Concessionaires and private industry donations.
Currently, the majority of funding for TFF-Indonesia comes from private sector initiatives representing major exporters, as well as Indonesian forest companies. TFF also receives contracted funding from The Nature Conservancy and specific project funding from the World Wildlife Fund.
